Driveways In Whitefield

Need a driveway or patio in Whitefield built by people who will still be here in ten years?

Block paving, resin bound, tarmac and Indian stone patios across Whitefield, Stand, Besses o' th' Barn and Hollins

Whitefield is ten minutes from us along the M60 and it is somewhere we have worked steadily for two decades. It is mainly a town of 1930s semis - long straight roads of them off Bury New Road and Radcliffe New Road - with the older Victorian villas of Stand around the church and All Saints, and a lot of newer housing towards Hollins and Unsworth. Most of the driveways we do here are the same story: a side drive laid for a Morris Minor being made wide enough for two modern cars, done properly from the base up.

About Whitefield

Driveways and patios built for Whitefield houses and Whitefield ground

Whitefield grew along the turnpike between Manchester and Bury, and the older part of it is Stand, up on the hill around St Mary's church, where there are Georgian and Victorian houses in a conservation area. The great bulk of the town went up between the wars: semi-detached houses with bay windows, side drives and decent front gardens across Besses o' th' Barn, Hillock, Park Lane and the roads either side of Bury New Road. There is also postwar estate housing towards Hollins and Unsworth and a scatter of newer builds on infill sites. With the Metrolink at Whitefield and Besses, on-street parking has become a problem, which is why off-road parking is the main reason people call us.

The ground is glacial clay over Coal Measures, with the land falling towards the Irwell at Ringley and Stand. Clay soils here shrink in a dry summer and swell in a wet winter, and a lot of the original 1930s concrete drives have cracked along the movement lines. Whitefield gets around 900mm of rain a year. Everything we lay is on a base deep enough to bridge that movement and drained so water does not sit under the surface.

Why us in Whitefield

What a driveway in Whitefield gets from a Middleton firm

  • ✓1930s side drives widened to take two cars, with new edging set in concrete and the base rebuilt across the full width
  • ✓Cracked original concrete broken out and removed rather than overlaid, so the new surface is not sitting on a moving slab
  • ✓Stand conservation area handled with Bury Council's guidance on materials - stone setts and clay block where the street calls for it
  • ✓Permeable surfaces and drainage channels on every drive, so a Whitefield front garden can be paved without a planning application
  • ✓Ten minutes from Middleton, with a quick site visit and no travel padding in the price
Before and after: Gravel and path to cream resin by S P Groundworks & Driveways - the kind of job we do across Whitefield

“Cracked 1930s concrete is the starting point for more than half of the Whitefield driveways we replace.”

The guarantee

Every drive we lay in Whitefield is put in writing

A driveway is a structure. The part you see - the block, the resin, the tarmac - is 50 to 60mm of the 250mm we build, and it is the 200mm underneath that decides whether it is still flat in ten years. So our guarantee is written around the bit that matters: the excavation depth, the compacted MOT Type 1 base, the edge restraints haunched in concrete and the falls that move water off the surface. If any of that lets you down inside the ten years, we come back and put it right at our cost. Terms and conditions apply, and you get them on paper before we start, not after.

  • Sub-base depth and compaction stated on the quote, not left to chance
  • Edging set in concrete so the surface cannot spread or rock
  • Settlement, sinking or lifting caused by our work put right free
  • Materials backed by the manufacturer on top of our own cover

How we work

Seven steps to a driveway in Whitefield that stays flat

Most of what goes wrong with a drive goes wrong in steps three to five, which is why they are the ones we spend the longest on.

  1. Free site visit

Scott comes out, measures up, looks at what is under the existing surface and how the ground drains. On Whitefield clay that visit is where the real decisions get made.

  2. Written, itemised quote

Excavation depth, sub-base spec, edging, drainage and the surface all listed with a fixed total. The price on the paper is the price you pay.

  3. Excavation and sub-base

The old surface comes out completely. We dig to the depth the ground needs - never less than 150mm of MOT Type 1 for a drive - and compact it in layers with a plate or roller.

  4. Edge restraints

Kerbs, block edging or aluminium trims are bedded and haunched in concrete before anything is laid, so the finished surface cannot spread or rock.

  5. Drainage and falls

Linear channels, gullies and soakaways go in now, with falls set so water leaves the surface and stays inside your boundary as the rules require.

  6. Laying the driveway

Screeded sand and machine-cut block, hot-rolled tarmac, hand-trowelled resin or floated and stamped concrete - laid by the same crew that did the groundwork.

  7. Handover and guarantee

We walk the job with you, sweep and sand-in or seal as the surface needs, take the waste away and hand over the ten-year written guarantee before we leave.

FAQ

Driveway questions from Whitefield

Do I need planning permission for a driveway in Whitefield?

Usually not. Bury Council is the planning authority and the national rule applies - a front drive of any size is fine without an application if the surface is permeable or the water drains to a lawn, border or soakaway on your own land. The exception is the Stand conservation area around the church and listed houses, where the council may want to approve materials. We check before we quote.

Can you widen my side drive to fit two cars?

Yes, this is the job we do most in Whitefield. We take out the old drive and the strip of garden beside it, rebuild the base across the whole width, set new edging in concrete and lay the new surface as one piece so there is no visible join. If the existing dropped kerb is too narrow we apply to Bury Council to extend it.

Why has my 1930s concrete driveway cracked?

Almost certainly ground movement. The clay under Whitefield swells and shrinks with the seasons, and a thin concrete slab laid straight onto it with no base cannot bridge that. Once it cracks, water gets under it and the pieces start to rock. The answer is to remove it and rebuild on a compacted Type 1 base, which is what we do rather than overlaying.

How long will the work take and can I still get the car off?

A two-car drive takes three to five working days. You will need to park on the road for that time, and we let you know exactly which days. Block paving can be driven on 24 to 48 hours after laying, resin bound after about three days, tarmac the next day once it has cooled.
