Prestwich has some of the best housing in north Manchester - big Edwardian villas around Bury New Road and St Mary's, wide 1930s semis in Sedgley Park, and the detached houses backing onto Heaton Park - and the owners of those houses tend to want a driveway that looks like it belongs. That is the kind of work we like. From Middleton it is a fifteen-minute run down the M60, and we have been laying clay block, natural stone and resin drives in Prestwich for most of the last twenty years.

About Prestwich
Prestwich grew as a well-to-do suburb in the Victorian and Edwardian years, and the housing around Bury New Road, Prestwich Village and St Mary's Road still shows it - red-brick villas with gables, big bay windows and gardens that were laid out for carriages rather than cars. Sedgley Park and Kersal are largely 1930s semis and detached homes on generous plots, and there is a strong tradition here of well-kept front gardens and driveways. Around Heaton Park and towards Simister the houses are larger and newer, and further down towards Rainsough and Polefield there are terraces and postwar semis. It is also a busy area for house extensions and loft conversions, which often means the drive and patio get redone at the same time.
The ground is glacial clay over Coal Measures on the lower side and sandier ground on the ridge along Bury New Road, with the Irwell valley falling away to the west. Prestwich is sheltered compared with the Pennine towns and gets around 900mm of rain a year, but the clay still holds water and the same rules apply: deep base, edges set in concrete, water sent somewhere on purpose. Bury Council has a conservation area covering Prestwich Village and St Mary's, and we choose materials with that in mind.

Why us in Prestwich
“Around two thirds of our Prestwich patio jobs are tied to an extension or garden room going in at the same time.”
Based on enquiries handled by S P Groundworks & Driveways.
The guarantee
A driveway is a structure. The part you see - the block, the resin, the tarmac - is 50 to 60mm of the 250mm we build, and it is the 200mm underneath that decides whether it is still flat in ten years. So our guarantee is written around the bit that matters: the excavation depth, the compacted MOT Type 1 base, the edge restraints haunched in concrete and the falls that move water off the surface. If any of that lets you down inside the ten years, we come back and put it right at our cost. Terms and conditions apply, and you get them on paper before we start, not after.

How we work
Most of what goes wrong with a drive goes wrong in steps three to five, which is why they are the ones we spend the longest on.
Scott comes out, measures up, looks at what is under the existing surface and how the ground drains. On Prestwich clay that visit is where the real decisions get made.
Excavation depth, sub-base spec, edging, drainage and the surface all listed with a fixed total. The price on the paper is the price you pay.
The old surface comes out completely. We dig to the depth the ground needs - never less than 150mm of MOT Type 1 for a drive - and compact it in layers with a plate or roller.
Kerbs, block edging or aluminium trims are bedded and haunched in concrete before anything is laid, so the finished surface cannot spread or rock.
Linear channels, gullies and soakaways go in now, with falls set so water leaves the surface and stays inside your boundary as the rules require.
Screeded sand and machine-cut block, hot-rolled tarmac, hand-trowelled resin or floated and stamped concrete - laid by the same crew that did the groundwork.
We walk the job with you, sweep and sand-in or seal as the surface needs, take the waste away and hand over the ten-year written guarantee before we leave.

Out and about
Block paving can be walked on straight away, but resin needs a day and tarmac wants an afternoon. Three good reasons to be out of the house.

FAQ
For most houses, no - Bury Council follows the national rule that a front drive needs no permission if it is permeable or drains within your own boundary. Prestwich does have a conservation area covering the Village and St Mary's, and a number of listed buildings, and in those the council may want a say on materials such as block colour or stone type. We check your address before we quote and choose materials that will pass.
Clay pavers in a red or multi tone, natural stone setts, or a resin bound finish in a warm buff or grey. All three are used on the better streets around Bury New Road and St Mary's Road. We would steer away from bright concrete block or plain tarmac on a house like that - it takes the value out of the front.
Yes, and we do it often in Prestwich. We liaise with the builder on levels, drainage connections and timing so the patio and drive go in after the heavy work is done and nothing gets damaged. Doing the groundwork for both at the same time usually saves money on excavation and skips.
Resin bound starts from around £70 per square metre including excavation and the sub-base, and clay block from around £65. A typical two-car villa front in Sedgley Park runs to £5,000 to £9,000 depending on size and edging. Every quote is written, itemised and fixed.
