Failsworth is fifteen minutes from us down through Chadderton, sitting where Oldham borough meets the city on the Oldham Road. It has the Metrolink, the canal and a big mix of housing - mill terraces along the main road, interwar semis on the estates behind, postwar council housing and a lot of newer builds on old industrial land near the canal. Driveways in Failsworth are mostly about parking: the Metrolink has made on-street space scarce, and a paved front that drains properly is the answer for most of the houses here.

Scott usually rings back the same working day.
About Failsworth
Failsworth is a long, narrow town strung along Oldham Road between Newton Heath and Hollinwood, and its housing reflects a century of growth. Nearest the road are the Victorian terraces built for the mills and the hat factories, many with small front yards that owners want turned into parking. Behind them are 1930s semis on roads off Ashton Road and around Failsworth Pole, then postwar estates towards Woodhouses and the Daisy Nook side. In the last twenty years new housing has gone up on the mill sites along the Rochdale Canal and near the Metrolink stop, most of it with thin developer drives. Woodhouses to the east is more rural, with older houses and bigger plots.
The ground is glacial clay over Coal Measures, flat and fairly wet along the canal and the Medlock at Daisy Nook, firmer on the slight rise towards Hollinwood. It is the same clay that runs across the whole of north Manchester and it needs the same treatment: a deep compacted base, edges held in concrete and water routed off the surface rather than left to sit. Failsworth gets a little under 900mm of rain a year.

Why us in Failsworth
“Parking pressure since the Metrolink opened is the reason given by most Failsworth customers converting a terrace front.”

The guarantee
A driveway is a structure. The part you see - the block, the resin, the tarmac - is 50 to 60mm of the 250mm we build, and it is the 200mm underneath that decides whether it is still flat in ten years. So our guarantee is written around the bit that matters: the excavation depth, the compacted MOT Type 1 base, the edge restraints haunched in concrete and the falls that move water off the surface. If any of that lets you down inside the ten years, we come back and put it right at our cost. Terms and conditions apply, and you get them on paper before we start, not after.

How we work
Most of what goes wrong with a drive goes wrong in steps three to five, which is why they are the ones we spend the longest on.
Scott comes out, measures up, looks at what is under the existing surface and how the ground drains. On Failsworth clay that visit is where the real decisions get made.
Excavation depth, sub-base spec, edging, drainage and the surface all listed with a fixed total. The price on the paper is the price you pay.
The old surface comes out completely. We dig to the depth the ground needs - never less than 150mm of MOT Type 1 for a drive - and compact it in layers with a plate or roller.
Kerbs, block edging or aluminium trims are bedded and haunched in concrete before anything is laid, so the finished surface cannot spread or rock.
Linear channels, gullies and soakaways go in now, with falls set so water leaves the surface and stays inside your boundary as the rules require.
Screeded sand and machine-cut block, hot-rolled tarmac, hand-trowelled resin or floated and stamped concrete - laid by the same crew that did the groundwork.
We walk the job with you, sweep and sand-in or seal as the surface needs, take the waste away and hand over the ten-year written guarantee before we leave.

Out and about
Block paving can be walked on straight away, but resin needs a day and tarmac wants an afternoon. Three good reasons to be out of the house.

FAQ
Usually no. Failsworth is in Oldham borough, so Oldham Council is the planning authority, and the national rule applies: a front drive of any size is fine without an application if the surface is permeable or the rain drains to a lawn, border or soakaway on your own land. Every drive we build here meets that. If the house is listed or in a conservation area the council may want to approve materials, and we check before quoting.
Yes - it is the most common Failsworth job we do. We remove the wall and the old yard surface, excavate, build a compacted base, set edging in concrete and lay block paving or resin bound with a drainage channel at the pavement edge. The dropped kerb is applied for through Oldham Council's highways team and we time the drive to go in when the crossing is approved.
Two to three working days for a single-car terrace front, three to five for a two-car semi. We tell you the start and finish dates on the quote and stick to them. You can walk on block paving straight away and park on it after 24 to 48 hours.
Yes. We cover the whole of Failsworth, Hollinwood, Woodhouses, Lime Side and Newton Heath from our base in Middleton, along with Chadderton, Oldham and Royton, which each have a page of their own.
