Bury is fifteen minutes from our yard up the A6045 through Heywood, and it is a town we have worked in for most of the last twenty years. It has some of the best-kept Victorian and Edwardian housing in the north of Greater Manchester - around Walmersley Road, Manchester Road and Bury New Road - along with the big 1930s semis of Sunny Bank and Unsworth and the newer estates around Chesham and Elton. What the good houses deserve is a driveway built to the same standard, and that starts below the surface.

About Bury
Bury sits in the Irwell valley with the town centre on a rise above the river, and the housing spreads out in every direction. Walmersley and Limefield to the north have large Victorian villas and interwar detached homes on tree-lined roads, with long drives that are worth doing in clay block or resin. Elton and Brandlesholme to the west are mostly postwar semis and estate housing. Sunny Bank, Unsworth and Pimhole to the south and east have big 1930s semis with side drives that need widening, plus a lot of 1960s concrete that has cracked. Around the centre and Fairfield there are terraces where front gardens are being turned into parking. Bury also has a number of conservation areas, including parts of the town centre and Walmersley, where the council takes an interest in materials.
The geology here is sandstone with glacial sand and gravel over it in the Irwell valley, which drains better than the clay to the east of us - one of the reasons Bury drives tend to fail from thin bases and poor edging rather than waterlogging. Higher up towards Walmersley and Tottington the ground turns to clay again and the plots get steeper. Rainfall is a little under 1,000mm a year, more than the city and less than Rochdale.

Why us in Bury
“Nearly every failed block paved drive we are asked to look at in Bury has the same fault - edging blocks that were laid loose on sand rather than haunched in concrete.”
Based on jobs handled by S P Groundworks & Driveways.
The guarantee
A driveway is a structure. The part you see - the block, the resin, the tarmac - is 50 to 60mm of the 250mm we build, and it is the 200mm underneath that decides whether it is still flat in ten years. So our guarantee is written around the bit that matters: the excavation depth, the compacted MOT Type 1 base, the edge restraints haunched in concrete and the falls that move water off the surface. If any of that lets you down inside the ten years, we come back and put it right at our cost. Terms and conditions apply, and you get them on paper before we start, not after.

How we work
Most of what goes wrong with a drive goes wrong in steps three to five, which is why they are the ones we spend the longest on.
Scott comes out, measures up, looks at what is under the existing surface and how the ground drains. On Bury clay that visit is where the real decisions get made.
Excavation depth, sub-base spec, edging, drainage and the surface all listed with a fixed total. The price on the paper is the price you pay.
The old surface comes out completely. We dig to the depth the ground needs - never less than 150mm of MOT Type 1 for a drive - and compact it in layers with a plate or roller.
Kerbs, block edging or aluminium trims are bedded and haunched in concrete before anything is laid, so the finished surface cannot spread or rock.
Linear channels, gullies and soakaways go in now, with falls set so water leaves the surface and stays inside your boundary as the rules require.
Screeded sand and machine-cut block, hot-rolled tarmac, hand-trowelled resin or floated and stamped concrete - laid by the same crew that did the groundwork.
We walk the job with you, sweep and sand-in or seal as the surface needs, take the waste away and hand over the ten-year written guarantee before we leave.

Porcelain

Resin

Old concrete broken out, full-depth base, resin bound in a cream blend with a charcoal block edge
Out and about
Block paving can be walked on straight away, but resin needs a day and tarmac wants an afternoon. Three good reasons to be out of the house.

FAQ
Usually not. Bury Council applies the national rule - a front drive can be laid without permission if it is permeable or drains to a lawn, border or soakaway within your boundary. Block paving, resin bound and tarmac with a drainage channel all qualify. The borough does have conservation areas around the town centre, Walmersley and elsewhere, and listed houses, where the council may want to approve materials. We check your address before quoting.
Yes, it is one of the most common jobs we do in Sunny Bank, Unsworth and Elton. We take the drive out to the boundary, keep a planted strip if you want one, set new edging in concrete and rebuild the base so the widened section is as solid as the original. A dropped kerb extension is applied for through Bury Council if the existing one is too narrow.
Clay pavers or natural stone setts look right in front of a Victorian or Edwardian villa and last for decades, and they are what we would suggest on Walmersley Road or Manchester Road. Resin bound is a good alternative if you want a smoother, lower-maintenance finish in a colour that matches the brick. We bring samples to the site visit.
Yes. From Middleton we cover the whole of Bury borough - Bury town, Walmersley, Elton, Unsworth, Sunny Bank, Tottington, Ramsbottom and Ainsworth - and Prestwich, Whitefield and Radcliffe each have a page of their own.
