Chadderton sits between us and Oldham, and the Middleton Road runs straight from our door into the middle of it, so it is one of the areas we know best. Most of the town is interwar and postwar housing - long roads of 1930s semis with bay windows and side drives that were built for one small car and are now expected to take two big ones. That is the job we do most in Chadderton: widening a narrow side drive into a full-width block paved or resin front without making the house look like a car park.

About Chadderton
Chadderton grew as a mill town and then kept growing between the wars, which is why so much of it is 1930s semi-detached housing - around Chadderton Park, Whitegate, Firwood Park and along Middleton Road and Broadway. Those houses have generous front gardens and side access, which makes them ideal for a wide drive and a patio behind. Closer to the old centre and around Mills Hill and Nimble Nook there are Victorian terraces, and to the south around Foxdenton and the border with Failsworth there are 1960s and 1970s estates with concrete drives that have long since cracked. Newer estates have gone up on old mill land at Broadway Green and near the Metrolink line.
The ground is glacial clay over Coal Measures with a fairly high water table on the low ground near the Rochdale Canal and the Irk, and it stays wet through winter. Chadderton gets less rain than Oldham town centre because it is lower, but it is still wetter than the middle of Manchester. Drives here need a compacted base of at least 150mm, deeper on softer plots, and a proper way for water to leave the surface.

Why us in Chadderton
“Two thirds of the Chadderton driveways we quote are semis where the owners want to fit a second car without paving the whole front.”

The guarantee
A driveway is a structure. The part you see - the block, the resin, the tarmac - is 50 to 60mm of the 250mm we build, and it is the 200mm underneath that decides whether it is still flat in ten years. So our guarantee is written around the bit that matters: the excavation depth, the compacted MOT Type 1 base, the edge restraints haunched in concrete and the falls that move water off the surface. If any of that lets you down inside the ten years, we come back and put it right at our cost. Terms and conditions apply, and you get them on paper before we start, not after.

How we work
Most of what goes wrong with a drive goes wrong in steps three to five, which is why they are the ones we spend the longest on.
Scott comes out, measures up, looks at what is under the existing surface and how the ground drains. On Chadderton clay that visit is where the real decisions get made.
Excavation depth, sub-base spec, edging, drainage and the surface all listed with a fixed total. The price on the paper is the price you pay.
The old surface comes out completely. We dig to the depth the ground needs - never less than 150mm of MOT Type 1 for a drive - and compact it in layers with a plate or roller.
Kerbs, block edging or aluminium trims are bedded and haunched in concrete before anything is laid, so the finished surface cannot spread or rock.
Linear channels, gullies and soakaways go in now, with falls set so water leaves the surface and stays inside your boundary as the rules require.
Screeded sand and machine-cut block, hot-rolled tarmac, hand-trowelled resin or floated and stamped concrete - laid by the same crew that did the groundwork.
We walk the job with you, sweep and sand-in or seal as the surface needs, take the waste away and hand over the ten-year written guarantee before we leave.

Out and about
Block paving can be walked on straight away, but resin needs a day and tarmac wants an afternoon. Three good reasons to be out of the house.

FAQ
Not usually. Oldham Council is the planning authority and the national rule applies - you can pave any area of front garden without permission as long as the surface is permeable or the water drains into your own garden or a soakaway. Every drive we build in Chadderton is designed to meet that. Listed buildings and conservation areas are the exception, and we check before quoting.
Yes, and on a typical 1930s Chadderton semi we recommend it. A well-planned front with the drive angled towards the house and a planted strip along the boundary looks better, keeps the rules on drainage simple and holds the house's value better than a wall-to-wall slab.
A two-car front on a semi is usually three to five working days including excavation, sub-base, edging and laying. Add a day or two if we are building a patio, steps or a wall at the same time. Block paving can be walked on straight away and driven on after 24 to 48 hours; resin bound needs a day before foot traffic and up to three before a car.
Yes. From Middleton we cover the whole of Chadderton including Mills Hill, Whitegate, Foxdenton, Chadderton Park and Broadway, as well as Royton, Failsworth and Oldham, which each have a page of their own.
